Mercy, Luis (fl 1708-1751) :
Six Solos, Op 1 – Vol 1 – Sonatas 1-3
- Alto Recorder and Basso Continuo
- Score (with with keyboard realization) + 2 Parts (Recorder, Basso Continuo)
- Level: Upper Intermediate - Advanced
Edited from the original for recorder and basso continuo by Charles Coldwell.
Mercy was “a celebrated performer on the flute abec and an excellent composer for that instrument" active between 1708 and 1751 in England. Mercy’s “Six Solos for a Flute. Opera Prima” were first published in 1718. They provide a rare look at the musical mind of an 18th-century recorder virtuoso, since the collection likely presents works he composed for his own public performances. (At that time in England “flute” indicated the recorder.) Composed in the Italianate style, these sonatas include written out variations, several highly ornamented Adagios, and spontaneous, expressive interludes along with flashy passages that are unabashed displays of virtuosity.
